REIMAGINING DESIGN EDUCATION FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

  • The School of Design at the University of Tennessee partnered with Invisible Notes to define a forward-looking vision for a new industrial design program—one grounded in the region and responsive to a rapidly changing profession. As an alumnus of the university’s design program, I also brought a firsthand understanding of its culture and legacy.

  • Drawing on experience developing academic programs at Berklee College of Music, Bifröst University, and the Iceland University of the Arts, as well as more than a decade of transdisciplinary practice at IDEO, Invisible Notes brought both educational and professional perspectives to the work.

  • Working closely with College of Architecture + Design Dean Jason Young and School of Design Director Sarah Lowe, I led a research process that brought together perspectives from design education, professional practice, technology, and Tennessee industry. Expert interviews and comparative research shaped an initial direction, which was then tested and refined through workshops with faculty, administrators, and industry representatives.

  • The resulting educational model emphasizes the relationship between human and artificial intelligence, regenerative approaches to materials, and collaboration across disciplines. The work gave the university a shared framework for curriculum, learning environments, recruitment, and industry engagement while complementing its formal program articulation for the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

  • Beyond the degree, the program positions the University of Tennessee to help shape the next generation of design practice and the role designers will play as technology, industry, and society continue to change.

  • Recruiting is open for autumn 2027 enrollment.
